Suggestions for successful signature gathering locations

WHERE TO GATHER SIGNATURES

NOTE:  Always keep the clipboard with you - do not pass it around the room.  You must witness each signature.

1. Petitions can be gathered on public property (such as the Post Office, Library, DMV, etc.) as long as you don't interfere with the flow of traffic. If an attempt is made to stop you, simply ask "What statutory authority can you cite for moving us?" Avoid confrontation and focus on collecting valid signatures. However, please make a note of the identity/authority of the person requesting you to move on and let us know ASAP.

2. SIGNATURES can be gathered on private property with permission.  Ask - you might be surprised!

3. High traffic areas where 30 to 60 signatures an hour are possible should be given priority.  (DMV offices are best, libraries are good, too)

4. Even though high traffic areas and plenty of volunteers are important for the success of this campaign, we want to encourage you to gather as many signatures in any way possible. (Examples: door to door, church, workplace, parent-teacher organization, retail locations, seasonal events like parades or festivals and anywhere the public gathers.)

Outside of any Oregon DMV office

Oregon Zoo - as folks wait in line

Holiday events in your area.  Please don't interfere with their enjoyment of the event - gather signatures while they wait for the parade to begin.

Saturday, December 4 - at the Oregon State Fairgrounds

Political events and meetings

If you have a suggestion or event to add to the list - please let us know ASAP!

Before you begin

PLEASE NOTE:  Be certain you are using only approved 10 line IP #22 signature sheets that include the certified ballot title at the top of the page, printed on white paper and are only provided to you by SOS or an authorized agent.

Make certain sheets are printed with signature lines on the front - text of the bill on the back.

Use only sheets provided to you by an authorized agent – NO copies are to be used!

Use black or blue ink pens when collecting signatures – they're the best.

As you are collecting signatures

ASK if the signer is registered to vote in Oregon (did they get a ballot for the last Presidential election?)

WATCH as they sign the sheet. You are to witness the signature. Never leave a signature sheet unattended. If you can't be there, put it away until you return. Signatures will be disqualified if it is discovered they were not witnessed.

Be certain the entire line is filled out completely, with signature, correct date, printed name, and address (including zip code).

If anyone is uncertain about signing (they don't understand the issue etc.) remind them that the initiative is only to get the issue on the ballot so that everyone can vote on it then simply refer them to the StopOregonSanctuaries.org website.

When you are finished collecting signatures

When a sheet is filled, you SIGN and DATE the bottom of the sheet as the circulator.

Some folks use white address labels at the bottom of their sheets – but, be certain to still sign and date it!

The date you fill in at the bottom must be the latest date on the entire sheet.
